Confederate Roses are blooming! Only $16.98, bring this Southern landscape staple to your home today and enjoy bountiful blooms from October through frost! This beautiful perennial is not actually a rose, but a fall-flowering hibiscus. The blooms on this hibiscus change colors as it ages from white to pink- and sometimes even to red. According to legend, this hibiscus acquired its name after a Confederate soldier was injured and his blood changed the white flowers to pink and red. Easily reaching 8 to 10 feet and hardy in zones 7 - 11, this versatile plant takes full sun to partial sun and thrives in moist, fertile soil. We recommend deadheading spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Avoid wilting during hot days by applying mulch around base of plant to help retain moisture. Get all of your gardening needs in one place- visit Garden Express and get the right soil, fertilizers, tools, and more! ... See MoreSee Less

Fall is the Optimal Time to Plant Your Garden!

There is a false perception in the gardening world that fall is the end of the growing season. In fact, it is quite the contrary. Fall is the perfect season for planting shrubs, trees, and perennials. The key is encouraging good root growth. Fall planting enables the root system of trees and shrubs to grow before the hot summer returns. At first thought, spring, with its explosion of buds and shoots and sprouts seems like the best time to put new plants in the ground. But spring has quite a small window for planting—between the last frost and the onset of hot weather. Some of the days in that window will be rainy, making the soil muddy and hard to work with a lot of the time. The soil takes a while to warm up from a winter's worth of cold; a new plant's roots grow slowly in chilled earth. In fall, the soil still holds summer's warmth, which encourages root growth up until the ground freezes. Fall planting gets perennials, shrubs, and trees off to a faster start the following spring. With our mild-winter in Southern Alabama, fall is even more emphatically the superior season for planting because roots can keep growing all winter. Trees, shrubs, and perennials put into the ground in fall don't have to deal with heat and drought early in their young lives.
By late next spring, when things begin to heat up, the plant's roots will be up to the job of absorbing and circulating nutrients and water. Another benefit to fall planting is that the plant requires less water. The days are increasingly shorter and cooler in the fall. Plants are going to be photosynthesizing less and using less water. A new plant will always need a good initial soaking but will need less supplemental watering in the fall. Now is the time to look for container-grown, or balled and burlapped, shrubs and trees. Plant your fruit trees, blueberries, and figs now. Start new grape and muscadine vines on a trellis for a splendid harvest next year. Bulbs not only like to be planted in the fall, but they need to be planted in the fall. Bulbs must have a cooling period in order to bloom in the spring. While the bulbs you need to plant now won’t return rewards until the spring, if you wait for warm weather to return, it will be too late to plant! A couple of cautionary notes: When you walk the garden center aisles, the perennials may look sad. Remember that their life force is in the roots and crown—the place where the base of the leaves meets the roots. This time of year, you don't want a lot of leaves or blooms. Look at the picture on the plant label and have hope. You may want to give your new plants a head-start by applying a root stimulator such as Fertilome’s Root Stimulator & Plant Starter Solution 4-10-3 when planting.
